Care and maintenance
Look after your clubs. Take a towel with you out on to the course and ensure that any mud or grass is cleaned from the face after any shot that has involved taking a divot. Always give the clubs a rinse and wipe down after each round.
The last thing you want is dirt coming between the face of the club and the ball at impact. Always replace club head covers after every shot, not only to protect the faces of drivers or putters but also to prevent damage to club shafts, especially if they are made of graphite. Novice golfers need not have too many long irons in their bag.

Odyssey Golf is owned by Callaway and as such retains the quality that you would expect from this fine golf equipment manufacture. Odyssey golf was purchased by Ely Calloway in 1997. He quickly brought innovation to the company that has made Odyssey golf a top of the line golf equipment manufacture. The company's White Steel 2-ball SRT putter is a prime example of new thinking when it comes to golf putter design.
Calloway is best known for its big Bertha Drivers that have set the standard worldwide. Ely Calloway purchased half of a small golf club manufacture that specialized in placing steel shafts cores within hickory club shafts to add durability and performance. This led him to become the CEO of Hickory Stick USA and in 1988 changed the name of the company to Calloway Golf Company.
We obtained a new Odyssey White Steel 2-ball SRT putter with a length of 35 inches. We evaluated the putter over a month using 4 different teaching pros in Southwest Florida. Each pro would use the Odyssey White Steel 2-ball putter for a week. It does have an odd shape and the source of name two balls can be easily discerned by the two white inserts placed at the top of the club that look like two golf balls. However given the comments of many golfers following the introduction of the Big Bertha and the constant innovation that has come from Odyssey and Calloway we waited until we had a chance see how it performed prior to making any judgements.
The Odyssey Two ball SRT putter did not seem to fit me as well as I would have liked. However I am old fashioned preferring to use bladed clubs especially putters. I only spent three days testing the putter on the practice greens before turning it over to the first of our testers. The evaluation process was totally subjective to overall feel and performance. Two of the teaching pros were already using a mallet style putter manufactured by another company. The other two used traditional bladed putters. All the pros were between 5'7 and 6'1' in height so the club did reasonably fit each evaluator.
The shape of the Odyssey's Saturn Ring construction brought comments almost immediately; however the fact it was made by Calloway's Odyssey Golf Company was enough to quell any real discontent. At the end of the month we sat down and discussed the positives and negatives that each golfe pro had for the club. We were surprised to find that the major complaint was the feel of the club. All thought the inserts gave the club an unusual feel. Accuracy was considered average to slightly above average with the comment that if each evaluator had more time to work with the putter it probably would increase. Overall the evaluators gave the club a thumbs up rating. The traditional blade putter pros still had second thoughts about having a Saturn Ring Technology shaped club in their bags.
It looks like Odyssey Golf has a winner in its White Steel 2-ball SRT putter

One of the most popular, and supposedly best putters on the market today, is the Odyssey White Hot 2 Ball Putter. What was unique about this putter when it first came out was its 2 ball alignment to help you visualize a straight line between you and the hole. There are 2 white circular disks on top of the putter head. All you have to do is line them up with the ball on the green and this will help you visually aim the putt to the hole. The club itself has a urethane face which improves accuracy and distance and a low center of gravity which reduces backspin on impact. In the hands of a pro this is an incredible club. It also sells for an incredible $169. Not for the beginning golfer.
Another popular club for a lot less money at $39 is the Pinemeadow Four Ball Putter. This is very similar to the Odyssey White Hot 2 Ball Putter except instead of a 2 ball alignment it features a 4 ball alignment. This club also comes with a low center of gravity. Because of the way the club is designed on short putts of 6 feet or less you don't have to worry about the ball going long because of the softness of the club face. At least that's what they claim. You'll have to judge for yourself.
Then there are the wide putters like the Bionik 207. These putters are not like any other putters on the market. What makes them different from the other putters is the wide mallet body which is embedded with two weighted bars underneath which is supposed to greatly increase accuracy and make a greater allowance for an errant putt. The club itself has an aluminium body which makes it very light weight.

Golf is played in an area of land designated a golf course. A course consists of a series of holes, each with a teeing area, fairway, rough and other hazards, and the putting green surrounded by the fringe with the pin (flagstick) and cup. Different levels of grass are varied to increase difficulty or to allow for putting in the case of the green. While many holes are designed with a direct line-of-sight from the tee-off point to the green, some of the holes may bend either to the left or to the right. This is called a "dogleg", in reference to a dog's knee. Scholars have claimed references to a form of golf from hieroglyphs found on stone tablets dating to ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. Chuiwan ("ch'ui" means hitting and "wan" means small ball in Chinese) a game consisting of driving a ball with a stick into holes in the ground was first mentioned in Dōngxuān Records (Chinese: 東軒錄), a Chinese book of 11th century, and Chinese professor Ling Hongling of Lanzhou University claims that the game was brought to Europe by the Mongols in the 12th and 13th centuries.[4] A Dutch game was mentioned on 26 February 1297 in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht. Here they played a game with a stick and leather ball. Whoever hit the ball into a target several hundreds of meters away the most number of times, won. The Scottish game of goulf (variously spelled) was mentioned in two 15th century laws prohibiting its play. Some scholars have suggested that this refers to another game, which is more akin to bandy, shinty or hurling than golf.[5] There are also reports of even earlier accounts of a golf like game from continental Europe.[6]

As early as the 15th century, golfers at St Andrews, in Fife, established a customary route through the undulating terrain, playing to holes whose locations were dictated by topography. The course that emerged featured eleven holes, laid out end to end from the clubhouse to the far end of the property. One played the holes out, turned around, and played the holes in, for a total of 22 holes. In 1764, several of the holes were deemed too short, and were therefore combined. The number was thereby reduced from 11 to nine, so that a complete round of the links comprised 18 holes. Due to the status of St Andrews as the golf capital, all other courses chose to follow suit and the 18-hole course remains the standard today.[9]

Essex golf courses showcase the talents of many of the UK's foremost golf course architects; James Braid, Harry Colt and Sir Henry Cotton in particular have been busy in the county with courses blending into their natural surroundings and reflecting the styles of the ages.
Braintree GC was founded near Stisted Hall during the golf boom of the late 19th Century and North Weald GC during a period of golf expansion a hundred years later yet both offer variety and a good test of golfing ability.

Channels GC is a fine example of Henry Cotton's ingenuity as it's built on land reclaimed from gravel workings and though it's a relatively modern Essex golf course, founded 1974, it boasts a 14th Century clubhouse. Cotton was also busy in Essex when called upon to oversee the design at Abridge Golf & Country club when they were forced to move to a third location.

All the architects, however, have had a head start with the lie of the land in the county with it's gently undulating landscape and mild dry climate lending itself to their creativity. James Braid was able fashion a links-like course at Orsett GC that often acts as an Open qualifier course.

Essex, however, has a significant coastline so courses like Clacton-on-Sea GC are exposed to the elements behind the sea wall.

Royal Epping Forest GC is of particular interest to visitors of golf courses in Essex because it has very unusual rule. In 1894 Forest Bye Laws made it compulsory for every golfer is required to wear red outer garments presumably because the course is laid out on public land.

Many golf courses in Essex were affected during World War II when their fairways were dug up to deter enemy troop carrying aircraft from landing an invasion force, however golf went on with many courses introducing local rules to cope with wartime circumstances. Chelmsford GC were forced to declare that 'a ball moved by enemy action may be replaced as near as possible to where it lay, or if lost or destroyed, a ball may be dropped, not nearer the hole without penalty'.

Thorpe Hall GC, original club of the former R&A Secretary Sir Michael Bonallack had it's fairways dug up but fortunately the Elizabethan clubhouse was unaffected and the James Braid designed course at Colchester GC was requisitioned as a military training camp. Interestingly Essex Golf & Country Club was constructed on the site of a former WWII airfield.

The Essex Golf Union lists 79 members so visitors to the area are sure to find many top quality and varied golf courses in Essex.

Being a golf fanatic I thought I would give a quick Golf GPS Review.

I first came across someone using a GPS for golf a couple of months ago and I initially thought it was just a gimmick and probably illegal. They are neither.

I had never played with Steve before and in fact met him on the tee where I thought he was busy checking his mobile. My first thought was "Oh no here we go, one of those who spends his life on the phone whilst playing golf - without consideration for the rest of the 4 ball".

Wondering whether to say anything he interrupted my thoughts with "One eighty five to the bunker on the right and two oh five to clear it". I said "that would sound about right" and asked him if he had been a member for a while. He said no he wasn't a member and this was the first time he had played the course!

Yep, you guessed it, it turned out his "mobile" phone was a golf GPS.

I was fascinated and I spent the rest of the round totally absorbed by this tiny little machine which was giving almost pinpoint accuracy in terms of distances to all sorts of places on the course. Steve said the first time he used it he beat his previous best round by 5 shots which he swears was because of his GPS.

What really amazed me about Steve was his club selection and the speed at which he played. He would simply walk up to his ball check his "caddie", take a quick look around - I suppose to confirm wind direction and any undulations that he might have to consider - select a club and fire away. Not a care in the world and seldom if ever did he ever come up short.

On the other hand, although I knew the course backwards I was still referring wherever possible to sprinkler heads for distances or doing a rough calculation when I was off line - which was often. I would invariably leave my approaches short whenever I missed the green. Once I owned my own GPS I realized that this was because I did not know how far I hit the ball with each club. It's a humbling experience to come to terms with reality!

Over a few beers after the game Steve showed me all the features of his Golf GPS and explained that other "fancier" models had even more features than his. At the time I couldn't imagine anything fancier than what I had seen that day!

But I have since learned that there are a lot of different brands and models of GPS and that each have different features.

When looking to buy a golf GPS you need to do some research and besides your budget the features you need to look for are:

Accuracy - determined by the number of satellites the unit has access to
Screen resolution - determines how easy it is to read the information under all lighting conditions. Plus some of them come with a colour screen.
Power source. Internal or external batteries and how long the unit can run before needing to recharge or replace the batteries.
After sales service. Vitally important for ensuring you can get courses downloaded.
Is there an annual fee? Some GPS models require an annual subscription for a variety of options including number of courses available for download, where these are stored, whether you retain ownership of them, can you share them with other users etc.?
Size and weight. Do you want something that fits comfortably in your pocket or is most of your golf done from a cart?
Can you use it to keep score? A great feature for those rainy rounds of which there are many for me living in New Zealand. No more soggy scorecards.
Can you keep track of fairways and greens in regulation? This really interests me because it means I can reflect on the game at any time and work out what I am doing wrong and consequently work on my weak points.
Can you work out exactly how far you hit each club? And I thought Steve was just very clever!
You can even add your own reference points with most models. I have since found this to be a really useful feature at my home course and always map courses I play for the first time. If I think there is a particular feature, such as a tree, that I feel should be plotted - then in it goes.
Like Steve my first game with a golf GPS also knocked a good couple of strokes off the round but unlike Steve it wasn't my personal best - I think I was too busy showing my new toy off to my four ball and trying to operate all the different features.

Before I chose the first model I bought, yes I now have two and am about to purchase my third, I did a thorough golf GPS review and am happy I did. Although to be hones if you stick with any of the popular models you won't go far wrong.

No-one could give you a better golf GPS review than existing users and you can be sure that any of the top fifteen most popular units will do the job admirably.

Start by hitting different designs of fairway woods, then you need to practice with your fairway woods, and build confidence in the clubs.
